TU student maps out water conservation plan

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- One south Georgia natural resource management student is working on a project that may help conserve billions of gallons of water a year in south Georgia.

Thomas University Senior Jason Hand is working with the Geospatial Analysis Planning and Preservation Center and the Nature Conservancy.

Hand is studying digital maps to locate embedded wetlands on farm acreage.

With the right technology, pivot irrigation systems can be programmed to limit the amount of water dispersed on farm wetlands.

Reward offered for Dollar General robbers

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Investigators in Thomasville need your help to identify two masked armed robbers.

Police say surveillance video shows two black men with bandanas on their faces walking into the Dollar General on Jackson Street Friday night.

One of the men pointed a rifle at the clerk and demanded cash.

Police say the clerk couldn't get the register open and the masked men ran from the store. 

Shoplifting suspect tries to escape Walmart, car won't start

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Thomasville Police Officers responded to Walmart in reference to a shoplifting Sunday night.

Employees told police a man left the store with a shopping cart full of items without paying. The employees said the man pulled knife and began swing it at them.

He then ran to a vehicle parked in the parking lot and attempted to leave however, but the car would not start, so he took off running.

Thomasville Police investigate attempted armed robbery

THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB)- Thomasville Police are looking for two men who attempted to rob a store, scaring customers and clerks.

Police say they responded to the Dollar General on West Jackson Street around 9:15pm Friday. Employees told police that two men came into store with bandanas over their faces. They say one of the men aimed a rifle or a shotgun at the clerk and demanded money.

Historic Thomas Co. Courthouse to reopen

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Renovations on an historic south Georgia courthouse are finally coming to an end.

The 155-year old Thomas County Courthouse should be back open for business next month.

SPLOST money was set aside a few years ago to modernize the building and bring it up to code.

County commissioners say, while it's now more advanced, the courthouse maintains its classic look.

Students optimistic after positive jobs report

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 8.2 percent in April.

That's down from 8.4 percent in March.

Southwest Georgia Technical College Social Work student Bridget Sangfield says she is encouraged by today's unemployment news.

"That makes me feel great because first of all I know I am getting a great education and so I know the placement will be great by the time I do finish."

While many new students were registering for the Summer Semester today, others were preparing and planning for the work force.

T'ville Y begins annual fund raising campaign

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- One south Georgia YMCA is asking for your help to continue offering scholarships and programs to the community.

Thomasville's annual "Why the Y Campaign" helps each of the city's three facilities provide free or discounted swim lessons, summer camps, after school care, and more.

This year's goal is to raise $90,000.

"It allows us to give scholarships to kids and families in need. The need is great and this campaign really allows us to continue to fulfill our charitable cause," said YMCA CEO Tom Everett.
