Thomasville Police investigate attempted armed robbery

THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB)- Thomasville Police are looking for two men who attempted to rob a store, scaring customers and clerks.

Police say they responded to the Dollar General on West Jackson Street around 9:15pm Friday. Employees told police that two men came into store with bandanas over their faces. They say one of the men aimed a rifle or a shotgun at the clerk and demanded money.

Historic Thomas Co. Courthouse to reopen

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Renovations on an historic south Georgia courthouse are finally coming to an end.

The 155-year old Thomas County Courthouse should be back open for business next month.

SPLOST money was set aside a few years ago to modernize the building and bring it up to code.

County commissioners say, while it's now more advanced, the courthouse maintains its classic look.

Students optimistic after positive jobs report

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 8.2 percent in April.

That's down from 8.4 percent in March.

Southwest Georgia Technical College Social Work student Bridget Sangfield says she is encouraged by today's unemployment news.

"That makes me feel great because first of all I know I am getting a great education and so I know the placement will be great by the time I do finish."

While many new students were registering for the Summer Semester today, others were preparing and planning for the work force.

T'ville Y begins annual fund raising campaign

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- One south Georgia YMCA is asking for your help to continue offering scholarships and programs to the community.

Thomasville's annual "Why the Y Campaign" helps each of the city's three facilities provide free or discounted swim lessons, summer camps, after school care, and more.

This year's goal is to raise $90,000.

"It allows us to give scholarships to kids and families in need. The need is great and this campaign really allows us to continue to fulfill our charitable cause," said YMCA CEO Tom Everett.

Shaw Center hosts girls self-esteem presentation

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB)- Thousands of teenaged girls get lessons on life, self-esteem, and bullying today in Thomas County.

The Shaw Center For Women's Health hosted their third annual self-esteem seminar for every Thomasville and Thomas County middle and high school girl.

Organizers hope the presentation helps girls think for themselves and take care of their health.

WALB's Most Wanted: Valdosta bank robber

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB)- On tonight's Most Wanted, a Valdosta bank robber who's
remained on the run for more than a year, despite his mug clearly captured on
surveillance video.

The crime happened February 17th, 2012. The man walked inside the
Bank of America on Baytree Drive around 4:30 on a Friday afternoon, and handed
a teller a note demanding money. 

He didn't wear a disguise,  so investigators hope someone will recognize
him.  The man was last seen running toward Valdosta Stadium Cinemas,
and that's where the trail ended.

Don't drive your boat drunk

LAKE BLACKSHEAR, GA (WALB)- A tougher boating under the influence is now in effect making the new legal limit for BUI's the same for drivers on Georgia's roads.

State leaders were at Lake Blackshear, a stop on their "where the rudder meets the road tour" to spread the word that driving under the influence will not be tolerated.

State and local law agencies are teaming up and cracking down on boaters operating a vessel under the influence.
